G But seriously, its pretty hard not to be repetitive, as well as remembering all the names of tricks. The level of UK skating is ridiculous, at every Jam / Event I have been to, I have had to ask someone what ‘that trick’ was at some point. But I guess that talking comes naturally, maybe its just the salesman in me…..
<Cue Beavis & Butthead style laughing>
SP Euuuuuwwww dude – you have a ‘salesman IN you’?
G Haha!! Well, not literally ‘in’ me, but you know what I meant you dirty bastard…!
SP So, when you’re MC’ing, do you aim to commentate and describe every trick going down or are you more selective?
G Only the ones that are gnarly, or if it fills in a gap of silence. I remember commentating on a BMX jam once and calling a ‘look back air’ a ‘let down air’, that was quite interesting. I guess it depends on the audience, if they are non-skaters then I generally keep it simple for them…..
SP Woah, woah, woah…..are you going on record to say that BMX’ers are retarded?
G You have to keep it fairly straightforward – especially for the councillors that like to attend….but most of them are pretty simple as well! I think it was the Dorchester opening day, I was putting up a big Indy sticker (as they were sponsoring the event) and one of the big council chiefs starting shouting aggressively at me…. “Don’t put stickers on the riding surface, that’s just not acceptable”. I had to be calmly led away, lets put it that way!!
SP What’s the secret of being a great MC?
G Great, I wouldn’t go that far!!. Maybe ‘OK’….on a good day. I don’t think that its any secret, more about keeping people smiling and laughing. Having a good relationship with the skaters is the key, so they know when you are taking the piss. If you can get the crowd stoked and easily hyped then I guess that helps a lot.
SP Whats your favourite skatepark that you’ve been to, and why?
G Mainly the ones over-run with scooters. I really love scooters and how they get in your way when you skate. Any park with less than 20 scooters is not worth visiting in my opinion……
<stunned silence – cue tumbleweed blowing across from stage left>
G Seriously though, I would have to say Kings Park in Bournemouth, just because its local. It was the building of this park that really got me back into skating. Up until Kings was built, I was mostly at Slades (Farm), slashing about on a longboard. Away from Kings I love Saughton in Edinburgh, plus the SYB crew and gnarly demons.
