Slick Minded Individuals

Marcus is only 21, but has been around on the scene for years – ask anyone who’s seen him skate in the flesh and they’ll tell you just how good he is. Wherever he skates, whether it’s street, park, tranny, whatever, he brings his style that can only be described as ‘floaty’. He just makes everything look so effortless, and has the quickest pair of feet anywhere.

A talented young lad is our Marcus – not only a sick skater, but also a great musician / singer / songwriter.

Along with other Hayling shredders (Jasper Derisley and Adam Alloway, plus muso’s James Rizzi, Luke Turner, and Dave Story), he’s currently in a Hayling-based band, “Slick Minded Individuals” who’s refreshing and totally original brand of hip-hop / funk / reggae / skank is currently winning fans (and industry acclaim) around the area and has landed them a slot in the finals of the UK’s ‘Live & Unsigned’ contest, playing at the O2 in London in late July – check them out if you can – one of the best live local bands around, no shit.

If you want to skate street in Portsmouth city centre, take my advice, get up as early as you can. Security is notoriously tight around the University and Guildhall areas – you’ve just got to get up before they do. Simple. No peds, no feds – for at least a couple of hours. Bliss.

After a pitstop for an obligatory Maccy D breakfast, we hit the car park where the old Tricorn used to be – damned shame they pulled that monster down. Personally, I blame Prince Charles and his ‘carbuncle’ rantВ В  – turns out it had ‘concrete cancer’ (whatever that is…?).

On building the new car park, the Council kindly, and unwittingly, created a nice bank on one side where (if you’re keen) you can gap to the road quite nicely. Again, if you don’t hit this spot early enough, you’ll be slamming into parked cars in roadside disabled spaces, which can be a drag to say the least. After chowing down on the McNosh, Marcus bangs out a bolts fs180, over a fence post, and into the road. Not to be outdone, Murray nails a huge one-footer following a similar route.

Not a bad start to the day, and its still only 6:30am!
