STORY BEHIND THE COVER SHOT:

Marcus Payne | Handplant | Pic: Harvey Mills

As well as being a mate, Marcus is a phenomenal skater, and always has a bagful of tricks up his sleeve. In fact, he’s got so many that he often forgets just what he can do. Tricks from years ago become replaced with newer ones and the old ones are relegated to the dusty recesses of the past. Every so often, Marcus will say something like, “Oh yeah, I used to have them down!”. And so it was, we were pissing about down our shitty local park on Hayling Island one beautiful late summer evening, and Marcus starts busting out inverts on a quarter pipe. We managed to get the keeper just as the sun was sinking behind the beach huts, and he plants it smack between the shadows.

Our first anniversary of the Magazine is fast approaching – December 1st, to be precise. We started off with the intention of publishing a mag every month – and for the first 3 or 4 we managed to do this. But we underestimated just how much work, time, and money would be going into the production of Skateboarding Photo. We don’t get paid for doing this, we have other jobs (and lives) away from skateboarding that pays the rent / mortgage. But looking back over our first year, we’re pretty stoked on what we’ve achieved, and want to take this opportunity to thank everyone thats helped, supported or encouraged us. Thank you all so much!

It’s been a while since we last put a mag out, but we’ve been busy in the background getting content, and making tweaks to the way you guys use and access the magazine. We’ve now got our new Homepage, where you can jump straight to any of the content from the current or any of the back issues. We’ve also changed our cover page layout and played about with our logo. All in all, we think the improvements have been worth it, and hope that you’re going to enjoy the improved user / reader experience.

In this issue (#8), you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained: an in-depth interview with legendary lensman, Jim Goodrich; a photo-report from the Ham Jam in September; a ‘Hometown Scene’ piece from Southampton; our first Book Review; an interview with new indy brand ‘Super Toxic Urethane’; plus a Lens Flare and your rad pics in Exposure. Two new features that we’re going to run on a regular basis also make a debut in Issue #8: ‘Indecent Exposure’ is a fun little contest that we’ll run whereby we’ll give you a shooting brief to go out with boards and cameras and capture specific tricks. This first month it’s all about the Hippy Jump, and it’s been brilliant looking through all of the images that you’ve sent in for it. For the next issue, we want to see your best Wall-Ride shots.

The second new feature we call “Park Life”. We reckon that over 90% of skateboarding in the UK takes place in local skateparks, and yet they never get representative coverage in magazines. Sure, skating and shooting in the streets is a blast but we often miss out on seeing some serious of the radness that goes on in our skateparks around the country. Every issue, we’re going to bring you recent shots from parks that we’ve visited. In this issue, you’ll see some pics of the new Haslemere park amongst others.

Enough for now, enjoy Issue #8, let us know what you think. HM

For those of us who have reached a certain age, Jim Goodrich needs little in the way of introduction. Like most skate photographers from back-in-the-day, Jim Goodrich ate, slept, drank and lived skateboarding – deep on the frontline. As a staff photographer for Skateboarder Magazine in the late 70′s, Jim captured some of the most powerful images in an age where it was all so fresh and the anticipation that anything could (and probably would) happen was as compelling as it was exciting.

In the following interview, Jim reveals some fascinating insights into the ‘scene’ around that time, but the part that I found most revealing is a snippet recent conversation that we had regarding the impact that his images in Skateboarder were having around the world…

“I often wished that I could have stepped outside the inside of skating and view it from an outsider’s viewpoint. I always knew what was going into the magazine months before it was ever printed, so I never had that wow factor in opening each issue when it came out. And there was never any mystery about what was going on since I lived it and knew the truth behind each story.

But I got to live it, so that made up for everything else (laughs).”

Jim, on your website you say that you “take life seriously but not myself” – how has this philosophy helped or hindered your approach to photography?

“My philosophy helps me in every aspect of my life. I’m very passionate about life, but realize that taking myself too seriously usually sets me up for disappointment when things don’t go the way I plan.”

When and where did you first get into skateboarding?

“I got into skating through my brother in 1976. I had no clue about the current skate scene and just skated for fun on the street and sidewalks. I eventually discovered where the ditches and backyard pools were through other skaters, who also introduced me to La Costa, which is where my career in skateboarding started.”

At what point did you start shooting skate photographs?

“I broke my arm skating early on and started shooting photos of my skater friends while my arm was healing. I went back to skating again, but I started spending more and more time shooting photos.”

Which photographers provided you with inspiration in the early days?

“There weren’t too many skate photographers around when I first started. Warren Bolster and Craig Stecyk were the best at the time and who inspired me the most in the beginning.”

What memories do you have of the infamous La Costa scene from back then?

“It was the ultimate skate scene and Mecca for skateboarders. It brought every skater together and was the place to be on weekends for many years until they started building skateparks. Many life-long friendships were started there, and it gave everyone a chance to meet and compete with virtually every other Southern California skater. There’s never been anything even close to it since then.”

How did you get noticed as a photographer?

“All my early skate buddies were stoking on my photos, even though I wasn’t very good and only shooting for fun. The first serious recognition of my skate photos didn’t happen until I started skating and shooting at La Costa since Warren Bolster used to hang out there and shoot photos. I was showing my photos to some skaters one day when Warren walked over and asked to see them. A few months later I got my first photo in Skateboarder Magazine, and several months after that they hired me as a staff photographer.”
